Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin

Music, Song and Dance for young people age 9 – 25

EYG are pleased to be offering a series of workshops for the 16-25 crowd, the first of which will focus on tutor skills. Check out the poster, or visit the web page for more details.

EYG fiddlesThe Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin was set up in 1995 by a group of parents who wanted to provide an opportunity for young people from across the city to come together and learn skills in traditional Scottish music. Over the past 15 years we have grown from strength to strength and, in addition to the hugely popular annual Easter event, EYG has a year-round programme of workshops and performance opportunities for young people aged 9 – 25. These opportunities range from the weekly Craigmillar Ceilidh Club and Wester Hailes Music Mondays where young people can learn skills in singing, song writing, guitar, fiddle and keyboard to performance opportunities at international festivals abroad!

EYG’s flagship Easter event takes place during the Easter holidays. Around 120 young people (P5 - S6) take part in four days of workshops led by some of the country’s finest traditional musicians. The event is supported by a team of volunteers and workshop range from fiddle and accordion to song writing and internet radio production. The Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin is for anyone; whether you’ve never played before, only just started, or you are an experienced player or singer. You don’t need to have experience of traditional music or be able to read music to enjoy EYG events.

EYG sessionIn 2010, we will also be running a series of workshops for young people aged 16-25 this year which will offer training specifically in tutoring, performance and composition. Keep an eye on this website for more information

EYG events are run entirely by a voluntary committee who are supported by a freelance Development Worker who works approximately three days per week. About one third of the committee members are former participants.

Come along and hear some live traditional music performed on fiddle, guitar, drums, tin whistle and piano and find out how your community can get involved in the work of the Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin.
