Easter Gaithering 2005 - Workshops

You will spend two sessions every day in your main workshop and follow this workshop through the four days.

Fiddle - Flute and Whistle - Singing Out - Mixed Instrument - Sounding Out

Fiddle

You'll learn some traditional tunes from memory and develop skills in rhythm, harmony and bowing. Classes for improving beginners (6+ months playing) to advanced. You'll be with other people of a similar level.

Aidan O'Rourke Aidan O'Rourke
Aidan is a fiddle player and composer from the Isle of Seil off the West Coast of Scotland. He currently plays with Blazin' Fiddles, Sunhoney and Alyth McCormick. "dazzling fiddler" (Scotland on Sunday).
 
Lori Watson Lori Watson
Lori is a post-graduate student of Scottish Music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) and Senior Tutor for Glasgow Fiddle Workshop. She has been a finalist at the Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year Award and has toured extensively at home and abroad.
 
Amy Geddes Amy Geddes
Amy was born and raised in Galloway, Southwest Scotland and began the fiddle at 10. Along with playing the fiddle, Amy was taught to sing in Scots Gaelic (Gàidhlig) and studied Scottish Step Dance. Now an experienced teacher of fiddle, dance and song with organisations such as the ALP Scots Music Group in Edinburgh, Glasgow Fiddle Workshop and Fèisean Nan Gàdheal.
 
Innes Watson Innes Watson
Innes, a multi talent young musician as a fiddler, guitarist and singer is now a student at RSAMD, studying Scottish Music. He currently plays with Borders Young Fiddles, teaches at Glasgow Fiddle Workshop and features in the Gaelic TV series Beolach.

Flute and Whistle

For players with 1 year + experience who are comfortable playing melodies. An exciting opportunity to learn traditional tunes and develop your playing skills with excellent tutors.

Sarah Allen Sarah Allen
Sarah, originally from London, is a founder member of The Barely Works and Big Jig. Sarah is currently playing flute and accordion with Flook "The force, power, virtuosity, exuberance and sheer joie de vivre of her playing had the audience on their feet from the opening bar" (The Shetland Times).
 
Brian Finnegan Brian Finnegan
Brian, from Armagh, a founder member of Upstairs in a Tent. Brian has played flute and whistle with the Kate Rusby Band and currently plays with Flook "...a thrilling talent, marvellous technical dexterity, bold musical imagination and urgent tone combining in playing of breathtaking suppleness and delicacy" (Scotland on Sunday).

Singing Out

Never mind Pop Idol! Learn what it takes to be a folk singer and fill up your lungs for some fantastic songs. You'll sing in a group and try out some harmonies but budding solo singers will get a chance to shine too.

Fiona Hunter Fiona Hunter
Glasgow-born Fiona is a graduate of the Scottish Music BA course at the RSAMD where she was a student of the renowed Alison McMorland. She has travelled widely, including appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Currently, Fiona is singing and playing cello with Malinky a dynamic band from Edinburgh.

Mixed Instrument

You'll play together in a group working on melody, harmony and accompaniment. You must have been playing an instrument 18 months or more.

Harris Playfair Harris Playfair
Besides being classical concert pianist, Harris, a Shetlander living in the Borders, has a wonderful rapport with traditional music. He created the Kelso High School Celtic Group, which played at the Scots Trad Music Awards and STV's Hogmanay programme. He was also an official accompanist at the Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year and teaches at Newcastle University's Traditional Music course. Harris was nominated for "Traditional Music Personality of the Year" at the Scots Trad Music Awards 2004.

Sounding Out

Explore music in a fun way using games, songs and instruments. You don't need to know how to play an instrument, but if you do bring it along!

Pete Baynes Pete Baynes
Pete travels worldwide in theatre and music as a freelance performer, director and writer. He is also a community artist and was until recently musician in residence at the Winter Gardens Museum in Sunderland and is now co-directing Theatre Workshop's community play "Black Sun over Genoa".
